Optimize and Innovate: The City of Brownsburg-Chatham Adopts Smart Control of Public Lighting

Brownsburg-Chatam, December 7th, 2016 The City of Brownsburg-Chatham takes the lead on technological innovation by implementing a smart control system for its public street lighting. Thanks to an investment of nearly 350,000$, a total of 518 “Cobra” luminaires will be upgraded and interconnected.

This modernization project will allow for a standardized network, while offering safe and optimal lighting conditions for all citizens. “The conversion of the street lighting to LED technology will have a considerable impact on the municipality’s energy consumption with consequent savings of 70%, equivalent to 21,500$ each year. On top of its high energy efficiency potential, LED technology is well-known for its durability. As a result, the City of Brownsburg-Chatham will see its yearly maintenance costs drop by 13,500$. Indeed, a LED luminaire which is lit for a daily average of 11 hours can efficiently last up to 25 years », explains Sonja Lauzon, Director of the City’s Public Works department.

The City of Brownsburg-Chatham takes this opportunity to include a smart control system to its network architecture. Several hundreds of modules will be attached on top of each luminaire which, once all connected, will form a communication network. This control system will be carried out by a centralized management system available to the Public Works Services at all times. It will notably enable the network’s real time surveillance as well as light intensity modulation. “With the implementation of such a system the City provides better management of its operations and ensures sustainable development of the territory” specifies Sonja Lauzon. “The municipality will now profit from a new platform, scalable to other smart city applications” she adds.

The project will be completed within the next six weeks and will involve the following sectors: Brownsburg, Dalesville, Pine Hill, Saint-Philippe Est and La Grotte. Energere, selected to carry out the project, will guide the City throughout implementation and offer dedicated support to the municipality for the next 10 years.
