The biomethanization and composting plant project of Énercycle, régie de gestion des matières résiduelles de la Mauricie, is getting a boost thanks to $26.4 million in joint financial assistance announced by the governments of Canada and Quebec on Tuesday, August 27, 2024.
This funding provides Énercycle with considerable support in the construction of its new biomethanization and composting organic materials recovery center.
As a reminder, Énergère is supporting Énercyle in this major project, in design, construction, financing, and the operation and maintenance over a 20-year period.
The centre will process around 35,000 tonnes of organic waste per year, helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 3,200 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year, equivalent to around 30,000 car journeys between Montreal and Toronto. The residual materials collected from Mauricie residents – via the iconic brown bin – will be transformed into natural biogas.
Enercycle’s new organics recovery centre will serve a significant portion of the Mauricie population, and will also collect organics from the region’s industries, businesses and institutions.
The project, whose total cost is estimated at over $75.7 million, is also connected to the biogas treatment and purification system, which will enable biomethane to be injected into the gas network. Ultimately, this centre will produce over 1.2 million cubic meters of biomethane, which will be injected into the Energir network.
Plans and specifications are being finalized, and construction is scheduled to start in spring 2025, with commissioning in fall 2026.
